Barbie Little Black Dress with Handbag

Posted on January 11, 2013

Here is Barbie’s little black dress that I crocheted with some fingering yarn. This is a variation of my Barbie baby doll top pattern. I took the original pattern and made a few modifications to create this dress pattern for a small Barbie doll.

I worked even on 20 sts from row 2 with a G (4 mm) crochet hook. Repeated row 11 for 5 rounds to round 15. I only did edging along the bottom and down the back openings and neck. I did not do the edging around the armholes. I also made the straps a bit shorter for this dress as this Barbie is a bit smaller.

This black dress was very hard to photograph. I had to take the photos with the doll laying down. Here is another picture that shows the stitching a little better. You can click on any of the photos to super size them.

Here is a closeup of the little black handbag I crocheted to complete the outfit. To crochet the little handbag, use a F hook, Ch 7, single crochet (SC) in 2nd chain from hook and in each down to end. (6 sts) Then SC around the other side of chain back to the beginning. (12 sts) Just work in the round and add a bead if desired on the 4th round. Crochet one more round of SC. At end of 5th round, end at side of bag opening and chain 6 for handle. Join to the other side of bag edge to secure handle to that side. Turn and SC around the chain of the handle back to the beginning of strap. Join with a slip stitch and finish off by weaving under the ends. The little black handbag is 1 inch square.

Because the fingering yarn is finer, the skirt portion with the shells is more see-through. So I added a crocheted lining to the dress skirt. I accomplished this by working on the inside of the dress. Turn the dress inside out and single crochet (SC) along the waist area to start the lining. I worked 2 rounds of SC in each stitch around. Round 3 work *SC in next stitch, then 2 SC in next stitch*, repeat around. Rounds 4-6: Ch 3 and double crochet (DC) in each stitch around. Join to top of Ch-3 at end of each round. The underskirt lining should be a little shorter than the dress so it doesn’t show.

As you can see you can easily adapt these crocheted Barbie doll patterns to fit different dolls and to create different designs. As always, enjoy the free crochet patterns and happy crafting to all!
