Crocheted Plastic Bag Keeper

Here is a crocheted plastic bag keeper made from what else – recycled plastic bags! This photo was shared with me recently from an on-line reader Joan. Joan crochet this bag keeper in black and white to go with her kitchen colors. She also added ribbon at the top for embellishment.

Joan’s plarn bag keeper was made using my crocheted plastic bag pattern.

I always enjoy seeing reader’s completed project and this one was particularly cool to see.

Crocheting Plarn Sandal Soles

Crocheted Grey Plarn Sandal Soles

I am working on a new pair of crocheted plarn sandals. You may recall my first pair of recycled plastic bag sandals I crocheted. This new project is using grey recycled plastic retail bags cut 1 inch wide and assembled using the using the knot and inter-loop plarn-making method.

I am happy to share this photo of the finished crocheted soles for the sandals. It’s been a real trial and error for these soles as I wanted to improve on my original pattern. You may notice that there are two darker grey soles and two lighter ones. I didn’t have enough of one color to complete all four soles. I plan to put two sole pieces together to create one reinforced sole for each sandal. Now that I have the soles done, I can now continue working on the crochet pattern that I will eventually share here on my blog.

Basket Weave Dishcloths

Basketweave Stitching

Crocheting in a basket weave design creates a nice texture and makes for a pretty dishcloth. I tried my hand crocheting in basket weave to create these dishcloths. My friend Kristy helped me with her pattern for this basket weave design cloth. On the first one I crocheted, I did 4 rows in front post and back post sets.

Here is another crocheted dishcloth that I did following Kristy’s 3 row set pattern.

With Kristy’s permission, I have posted the basic crocheted basket weave pattern that she shared with me below.

Denim Trimmed Match Holder

Denim Trimmed Match Holder

Here is another great use of recycled denim hem strips from your old jeans. This project uses a strip of hem along with a recycled glass jar to make a handy match holder. Take the screw-on lid from the jar and drill a hole into the lid top for the match opening. Then using the lid as a template, trace around it on a piece of sandpaper. Cut out the sandpaper and glue it onto the lid top as shown.

Here is the top with the sandpaper glued on the lid.

Here is a closeup on the inside of the lid.

Crocheted Baby Vest and Hat Set

Crocheted Baby Vest and Hat Set

Using my Ana sweater vest pattern, I crocheted this baby vest using a sport weight yarn vintage yarn called Von-Cott in baby blue. I followed the exact pattern directions using 2 skeins or 3.5 ounces of the sport weight yarn. Finished vest size should fit a 6-12 month baby with measurements 9-1/2 inches wide by 12 inches long.

Here is a closeup of the baby sweater vest.

I also crocheted a ribbed band hat using the vintage Von-Cott yarn. I followed the child’s size crocheted ribbed hat pattern. I needed to make the hat just a bit larger as I was using the sport weight yarn and a G (4 mm) hook. So I followed the child’s pattern details through round 5.

Baby Ribbed Band Hats

I have been crocheting purple baby hats for the PURPLE baby crying awareness campaign. PURPLE Crying is a program to help parents, caregivers and others understand this normal increased crying in healthy infants and prevent abuse such as shaken baby syndrome.

Details for the hat drive can be found here. They do ask that the hats be at least 50% purple in color and be simple with no straps or hanging pom poms etc.

Here is the baby size hat pattern that I adapted from the adult crochet hat pattern for this project. I have options in the pattern directions below for a 3-month old baby, newborn, and a preemie sized hat.

Enjoy the free crochet pattern and I hope you will support this is very important baby awareness campaign by crocheting or knitting a purple hat.

Pink Recycled Plastic Hat

Pink Recycled Plastic Hat

It’s been 5 years since I first crocheted a baseball type cap from recycled plastic bags. Recently someone asked me to clarify some of the pattern details so I thought it might be a good idea to re-work the pattern.

If you read my blog last month, you might remember me blogging about these pretty pink plastic bags that an on-line friend sent me. Well I used them to create pink plarn and crocheted this recycled baseball cap using about 20 plastic bags.

The pattern worked up a little different with this crochet project but generally the hat came out looking about the same. I did have to decrease a bit to get the hat tighter on my head and add another row to the brim portion of the hat. Here is the original crocheted recycled plastic baseball pattern with the changes noted in the post.

Crocheted Ribbed Hat Pattern

I’ve been busy lately crocheting more hats for the Warmth for Warriors group. One of my on-line group friends crocheted a cute hat using a ribbed stitch style that I really liked. After some help from Ellen, I finally got the pattern created. Below is the written crochet hat pattern that I created featuring the ribbed band that was inspired by Ellen from our Ravelry group.

The two-toned wool hat is my favorite using the crochet pattern so far. I used the pattern below and at round 7 switched from the olive green to the oatmeal colored wool yarn. Then you alternate every other round in the two colors ending at round 20 with the olive green yarn. I carried the yarn not in use behind by just dropping it at my joining slip stitch. When you come back around you just pick up the dropped color at the slip stitch.

At row 21, I began the ribbing with the olive green wool. Make sure you use the same color in round 20 that you use for the ribbing so the first round of ribbing matches that you are working the front and back posts around.

Here is another version of the ribbed hat and in an extra large size. This one is crocheted all in one color and was designed more as a helmet cap to fit under a soldier’s helmet. I started with 16 double crochet (Dc) stitches and only went to round 15 following my original crocheted helmet hat pattern. I then added the ribbing rounds to complete the hat. It measures 23″ for a circumference and is 8-1/2 inches long.

As you can see you can change up the pattern’s fit and look by working in half-double (Hdc) or double crochet (Dc) stitches. And by working in stripes or all in one color of yarn. I have also included changes to crochet this hat for a child’s head size.

Have fun with the pattern and as always happy crocheting to all.
