Crocheted Pink and Grey Plarn Sandals

Posted on July 1, 2014

Here is my finished pair of pink and grey crocheted plarn sandals that I have been working on for months. This truly has been a labor of love and recycled craft challenge to get these completed. I posted my progress with this plastic bag project over the last several months. I crocheted the plarn sandal soles and improved on the pattern I used in the past for making recycled plastic sandal slippers.

I present the free crochet pattern for these recycled plastic sandals below. These can be used at the beach, around the house and garden, or even as shower sandals for college students. For larger or smaller sizes, just add more or reduce the stitches to your beginning chain and crochet the tops wider too as needed.

Pink and Grey Plarn Sandals Crochet Pattern

Materials needed:
One ball of plastic bag yarn “Plarn” cut 1 inch wide – Approx. 30 Grey plastic grocery bags and 10 Pink plastic bags

Here is my picture tutorial link showing how to make yarn from recycled plastic bags.

Hook: J (6 mm) metal crochet hook

Description:
Recycled Plastic Bag Sandals Women Size 9 to 9-1/2 M

Directions:
Make 2 soles for each sandal.

Rnd 1
With grey plastic bag yarn (plarn) Ch 21.

Sc in 2nd ch from hook in each st down one side until the last 2 sts, work 2 Sc in the last two sts of side and work 3 Sc in the end loop (by the knot before going around to the other side.)

Continue around the corner and down the back side of chain, work 2 Sc in the next 2 sts, then work a Sc in each chain st down to the end st. Work 3 Sc in the very end stitch loop to finish the round 1.

Continue working in the round without joining unless advised to do so.

Rnd 2
Work 2 Sc in the next 3 sts, work a Sc in ea st down to the last 3 sts of first side, then work 2 Sc in the each of the last 3 sts of this side. Work Sc in very end st, and then continuing around the other side of the sole, work 2 Sc in the next 3 sts. Sc in each st down to the last 3 sts of the side. Work 2 Sc in each of the last 3 sts on side of sole.

Rnd 3
Work Sc in end st, ( mark top center of toe here with marker), work 2 Sc in the next 3 sts on side of sole as you continue around curve. Sc in each st down to the last 4 sts before end. Work 2 Sc in the last 4 sts of curve and in the next 4 sts on the other side of curve. (Basically you want to work 2 Sc in the 8 sts around the heel of the sandal.) Sc then in each st down to the other end, work 2 Sc in the last 4 sts of curve on last side of round.

Rnd 4
Continue around the curve by working 2 Sc in the next 4 sts of toe. (Again you will have worked 2 Sc in each of the 8 stitches around the toe curve area.) Now Sc in each st down and around the other curve of sole and back up towards the toe. Stop at 14 sts before the top of the toe or about 3-1/4 inches from the toe top.

Hdc in each of the next 12 st and then Sc in the last 2 sts before the top of the toe.

Rnd 5
Sc in the next 2 sts after center of top of toe, then Hdc in next 12 sts. Sc in each st down and around heel and back up to 14 sts before toe center. Hdc in next 12 sts, Sc in the last 2 sts to center toe stitch.

Note: You may need to adjust and move stitch marker for tope of toe to be centered. I had to move it a bit to stay at top center of toe.

Rnd 6
Sc in next 2 sts after toe center, then Hdc in next 12 sts, sc in each st down and around heel and back up to the toe top.

Rnd 7
Continue aound toe working Sc in each of the next 14 sts. Sl St into next st and weave under into next st and finish off.

Top: Make 2 pieces.
With pink plarn ch 16.

Row 1
Sc in 2nd chain from hook. Ch 1 and turn. (15)

Row 2
Sc in next st, work 1 Sc Dec over the next 2 sts, Sc in next 4 sts, 3 Sc in center st, Sc in next 4 sts, 1 Sc Dec over next 2 sts, and Sc in last st. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3
Sc in each st. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4
Repeat row 2.

Row 5
Repeat row 3.

Continue repeating row 2 and 3 until you have 12 rows completed. Leave plarn attached for final edging row.

Row 13 (Edging)
Sc down side evenly and continue working Sc along the V shaped edge until you come to the center 2 stitches. Work 1 Sc Dec over the 2 center sts, then Sc in ea st remaining on front edge, Sc in ea st down last side of top. (Don’t Sc along the last row where you finished row 12. You only do trim along 3 sides.

Sole Assembly:
Put wrong sides of soles together slip stitch or whip stitch to two soles together. Use blow dryer on low to gently shape the sole pieces and to help them lay flat.

Once soles are assembled, attach pink top piece in place. Sl St top piece in place starting at right edge side and Sl St along side, toe, and down other side. Make sure you Sl St through all layers of sole and through the top to secure it in place.

Stretch the top as needed to get a snug but comfortable fit.

Love this idea and look forward to trying it. I’d love to see these with a flip flop top, or if it’s too uncomfortable between the toes, a mule kind of like the popular adidas ones.
