I have been crocheting baby hats for our local hospital nursery. Here is a simple crochet baby hat pattern with a rolled brim. The rolled brim idea came up as I had crocheted some hats that were too big and we just turned up the brims to make them smaller and fit the baby’s better.

Here is a photo of the hat not rolled. As the child grows you can just unroll the brim to make a longer hat so it can be worn longer by the child using this feature.

Rolled Brim Baby Hat Pattern

Baby ribbed hat measures:
Newborn = 12 inch cir by 5 inches long (4.5” with brim rolled)
Preemie = 11 inch cir by 4-1/2 inches long (4” with brim rolled)

Hooks:
H (5 mm) US sized crochet hook
G (4 mm) US sized crochet hook preemie babies

Materials: 1+ ounce Worsted Medium Weight or Aran Yarn

Small amount of contrasting yarn if desired for brim
With main yarn color, Ch 3 and join to form ring. Hat pattern is worked in the round without turning.

Rnd 1
Ch 2, work 9 Hdc in ring and join to beg Ch-2. (10)
(Ch-2 counts as first Hdc st.)
Rnd 2
Ch 2, Hdc in same st and 2 Hdc in ea st around. Join with Sl St to beg Ch-2. (20)
Rnd 3
*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next st*. Repeat between * around Do not join. Work in rounds at this point without joining. (30)
Rnd 4
Hdc in next st, 2 Hdc in next st, *Hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 Hdc in next st*. Repeat between * around. (40)
Rnd 5-12
Hdc in each st around. (If changing colors to contrasting yarn for brim, work Sc and Sl St in last two sts of round 12 to finish off color before brim.) (40)
Rnd 13-14 (Brim rolled trim)
With contrasting yarn if desired, attach yarn in last Hdc st of round 12. Sc in each st around.

10/2024 Edit
Depending on the yarn, you may need to do 1-2 more rounds of SC for the brim to get desired length.
I have found that by only crocheting 2 rounds for the brim isn’t always enough.

FO with Sl St in last st and one more Sl St in next st for smooth edge.
