Crocheted Potholders with Recycled Rings

February 4, 2015 4 comments

I love crafting with recycled materials. So when I crocheted these potholders, I used recycled plastic rings for the projects. I recycled these plastic rings from milk, juice and other plastic bottles.

Here are two crocheted potholders I made using my recycled rings. The green potholder has a milk jug ring for it’s loop ring and the blue speckled potholder has a smaller juice ring for the hanging ring. So depending if you like a larger hanging loop or smaller, just choose the ring dimension that you like best to crochet around the plastic ring for your potholders.

Both of these potholders were crocheted using my free basic potholder pattern.

Recycling Plastic Rings for Towel Holders

We are having a CAL (crochet-a-long) over in our Trash to Treasures group on Ravelry. We are crocheting kitchen towel holders.

Here is the plastic ring holder I recycled to use in this crafting project. This plastic holder is used in retail stores to hold together two hot sauce jars. I thought it would be a good ring to use for the base of my towel holder. Here is how I recycled the plastic holder.

Cut the rings apart with sharp scissors and trim the edges so they look like these below. The rings are 3 inches wide and make an excellent base for the towel holder pattern.

Crochet around the plastic ring using two strands of yarn held together. I generally did 3 single crochets in between each plastic flange on the ring. This provides a nice even coverage over the recycled plastic ring.

Now just follow the towel ring holder pattern that Delights created to finish off the holder.

Here are a few more towel holders I crocheted

Mini Recycled Wreaths

I crafted these Christmas wreaths by using recycled rings from milk, juice, and other bottles for my wreath’s base. The crochet wreath pattern I used can be found over at Ravelry that a blog friend Kristy posted. The ruffled wreath was created by just working more double crochet stitches around. Just add stitches to get the desired ruffling for your wreath.

By using rings that you recycle from bottles and jugs, you can save yourself money on crafting supplies as you have no need to purchase plastic rings for your wreaths. Not only can these rings be used for wreaths, they also be used on potholders and other crafting projects that call for round plastic rings.

Here is my green plarn wreath. I crocheted this using plastic recycled from packing pillows cut into plarn. I did just a single round of double crochet stitch around an apple jug ring for this little wreath with a J crochet hook. A small piece of red cotton yarn was used to add a bow to the wreaths. That’s all it takes to make these cute and quick little recycled wreaths. Enjoy!
