BLO Mini Christmas Stockings

BLO Mini Christmas Stocking

I have a new mini Christmas stocking pattern to share here at My Recycled Bags. This stocking is crocheted all in the back loop only or BLO as the commonly known abbreviation in the crocheting world.

The pattern can be worked in worst weight yarns for a 6 inch long stocking from top to toe. Or if you use an Aran or light weight yarn, the stockings measure about 5.5 inches long using a G (4 mm) crochet hook. I have shared a few photos here of the basic pattern, but feel free to crochet this pattern in stripes, work the first few rounds of the toe in a different color or even make a scrap yarn stocking by crocheting a mash of colors.

As always, here is the free BLO mini Christmas stocking pattern for your crocheting pleasure.

Cluster Stitch Recycled Gift Bag

Cluster Stitch Recycled Gift Bag

This week I present a variation of my cluster stitch bag that I made recently. The main body of this bag is crocheted using recycled plastic bags that have been cut into plarn using the looping method. I have a picture tutorial here for making plarn from plastic bags should you need instructions. Just click on the green link.

I wanted to add a gift bag type closure to the original pattern to create a reusable gift bag. I used some Christmas cotton to top this plarn bag and created a looped handle to finish off my little gift bag. The looped handle works wonderfully for closing the bag. I plan on crocheting several of these bags to use for gift bags for Christmas. They work up quickly and with the looped handle, you have a ready-made gift bag that doesn’t even require a bow.

Special thanks to Helen over at CrochetN’Crafts who was my inspiration for this project. So grab a few of those plastic bags laying around and whip yourself up a beautiful recycled gift bag for Christmas!

Crochet a Recycled Easter Egg Basket

Mini Easter Egg Basket

It’s time to crochet some recycled Easter egg baskets for the upcoming holiday. I want to share my latest creation which is a mini Easter egg basket. It holds one egg and can be used as unique gift idea. Fill your plastic egg with something special or simply place your gift inside the mini basket. The link to the free crochet pattern for the mini Easter egg basket is found here.

Here is a large recycled Easter basket that I made last year. This durable basket is crocheted from some special purple plastic bags that a friend from Crochetville mailed to me. I know purple bags are hard to come by but even using recycled white plastic grocery bags can create just as cute of a Easter basket. Simply add a colorful ribbon bow tie to spruce up your basket as I did with the mini Easter egg basket project.

Here is the free pattern link for the large plastic basket below.

Denim Christmas Stocking

Craft a recycled denim Christmas stocking this holiday. I used a pant leg of some old jeans and a printed stocking panel to make this unique Christmas stocking. I then topped it off with a crocheted top edge and a jingle bell.

Here is the back of the stocking. I left mine plain but you could add embellishments. Another option is to just make your entire stocking like this one and not use a printed panel as I did on the stocking above. Either way your recycled denim Christmas stocking is sure to be one-of-a-kind!

Below is a mini tutorial showing the steps to make your denim Christmas stocking.

Fused Plastic Valentine’s Heart

Here is a quick fused plastic bag craft idea for Valentine’s Day. This project involves no sewing or crocheting. It’s makes a perfect kid’s craft project that focuses on using recycled materials. This project was inspired by a recent comment I received from someone who wanted a recycled bag for Valentine’s day but didn’t know how to crochet. So here’s what I came up with. By using some pieces of red and white recycled plastic bags, some scrap yarn, a bit of ribbon and a small remnant of red felt, you or your children can put together this cute Valentine’s heart bag.

Below you will find the picture tutorial that I made while I was creating this little Valentine’s heart bag. Here is the step-by-step picture tutorial on how to DIY.

Green Easter Basket

Green Easter Basket

My Easter basket project this year uses the bottom of a laundry soap bottle and plastic bags. I cut the bottom off a plastic soap bottle and used it as a base for my Easter basket. I then crocheted around the base and up with recycled plastic bags or plarn.

The pink bunny was crocheted using AmiAmour’s free crochet pattern found here. This is my first official ami animal and while I’m not going into the ami making business, I was pleased with the outcome of my Easter bunny.

Oh and I used cut up plarn for the grass in my Easter basket. That way it can be recycled after the holidays into another project. Happy Easter!

Little Plarn Christmas Bag

Plarn Christmas Bag

Time to kick of the holiday crafting with this little plarn Christmas bag I crocheted. Isn’t it adorable and guess what — its free to make. All you need is a few recycled plastic bags to create this cute little striped gift bag. So grab about 3 red, green, and a white plastic bag and cut them into plarn. For this project you want your plarn to be real thin so I cut my strips only about 1/2 inch wide.

With the built-in handle, you have a ready made gift bag perfect for that special little gift item or you can slip a gift card into your recycled plastic gift bag. My inspiration was Kristy’s ornament pattern as I tried doing it in plarn (plastic bag yarn) and it came out way too big. So I just modified the top and added the handle for a closure.

My little plarn Christmas bag is 6 inches wide by 3 inches tall. The handle is 3 inches long. Using a H crochet hook, I basically followed the pattern by Kristy until row 18 which was my last row to work. I marked the center of my bag by laying it down flat. Sc around in each stitch of this last row — at the center chain 3 and skip 2 stitches to create your hole for the handle. Then Sc in each stitch around to other center mark for the handle, chain 22 for handle. Skip 2 stitches and Sc into last stitches of row and finish off.

Volia — Your recycled Christmas gift bag is complete. You also can come and join the fun over at Retro Housewife’s Green Holiday Carnival that I am participating in this weekend.

Mini Christmas Crochet Stocking Back

I make many mini Christmas stockings each year for the Warmth for Warriors group. I decided I wanted to try a new crochet pattern to change things up a bit on my stocking making and came up with this new pattern. I took my cuffed baby booties pattern and tweaked it to create this mini cuffed Christmas stocking. The pattern is easy and can be crocheted in less than an hour plus it is free so enjoy the crochet pattern below.

Mini Christmas Cuffed Stocking Pattern

Crochet hook: H (5 mm) hook
Yarn: 3/4 oz Worst Weight Yarn (42-50 yards depending on yarn)
Finished size: 6 inches tall, 4.75” wide at toe, & 2.75” wide at top.

Rnd 1
Ch 2, work 9 Sc in 2nd ch from hook. (You can also start with a magic circle and work 9 Sc’s in circle.) Don’t join as the toe section is worked in rounds without joining. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round. (9 sts)
